When I first started making porn back in 2000, I knew I wanted to make good porn for women. I was sick of mainstream porn’s male gaze and wanted to offer women like myself an alternative. In the years since, I’ve broadened and refined my ideas of what porn women would like and my tastes have expanded as well. I’ve also spoken to hundreds of women about what they want to see in porn.
I’d like to offer my Good Porn Manifesto. This is a list of things I think would appear in my perfect kind of porn. It’s also things that will make porn better in general.
Things I Want To See
- Female pleasure and female orgasms
- Clitoral stimulation, either with fingers or with a vibrator. Beforehand or during sex.
- Sex that isn’t always focused on penetration. There’s so many ways to get off that don’t involve penis-in-vagina!
- Cunnilingus. Of course. Preferably for a decent amount of time.
- Connection between partners: eye contact, sensual touching, chemistry.
- Communication – before, during and after sex. Talking about what works and what doesn’t.
- Consent made apparent between performers.
- A reason for people to have sex. Not always, of course – plots can get boring. But sometimes it’s nice to have some buildup before the fireworks.
- More focus on the male performer. Let me see his face! I want more ogling at men. Also, guys who aren’t afraid to make noise during sex.
- Diversity – in body types, races, abilities, sexualities, kinks…
- Both realism and fantasy. Sex that seems more realistic, less “open to the camera”. But also porn that accommodates unusual fantasy scenarios.
- Women taking control during sex, or being totally taken care of and having their needs met without reciprocation.
- Context. If kinky or power play things happen during sex, there needs to be an idea of consent, of the performers negotiating their needs and desires.
- Respectful language, both in dialogue and in the description of the performers and the scene. Move away from porn cliches. Describe sex in a positive way.
- A sense of fun and playfulness. Good porn should have laughter. Bloopers.

Things I Want To See Less Of
- Clit slapping. It might work for some women but it happens too often in porn.
- Long nails. They never look right for touching soft, sensitive places.
- Jackhammering. From the beginning, endlessly, painfully. Mix it up. Go slow sometimes!
- Less cliched dialogue from performers, e.g. “Yeah you like that? Fuck that pussy etc”
- Less “extreme” moves like choking, slapping, gagging, crying, verbal abuse UNLESS it’s made apparent the female performer is into it. (See “context” above). Also, this kind of sex shouldn’t be “standard” for every porn film.
- Less endless moaning by female performers. More realistic sounds.
- Less facial cumshots (unless the female performer wants it). The external cumshot is so standard and it’s boring.
- Less make up on performers.
- Less of the female performer leaving her shoes on during sex,
- Less of the camera always cutting the guy out of the frame.
- Less guys looking haughty and bored when they’re getting a blowjob.
- Less of the negative labels used to describe performers e.g. MILF, “shemale”, slut, whore…
- Basically, just less of the usual, male gaze stuff that we see all the time.
Obviously this is a personal list of what I think constitutes good porn. These are things I would like to see in my perfect porn film, along with a list of individual gripes. I’m aware that the porn industry is pretty diverse in what it depicts… yet there are plenty of standards and cliches that have proliferated in porn and it would be good if the industry stepped back a bit and mixed it up a little.
I do know that porn made with this list in mind is going to be much more appealing to women than mainstream male gaze content.
